SDMEA strengthens municipal electric utilities across South Dakota by advocating on their behalf, coordinating support between member communities, and investing in the people who keep the lights on. Through legislative representation, mutual aid, workforce development, and ongoing training, the association helps its 35 member communities reliably serve approximately 100,000 South Dakotans.

Legislative &

Regulatory Advocacy

SDMEA represents municipal electric utilities before state, regional, and federal decision-makers. During Pierre's legislative session, our team monitors bills, testifies on issues affecting municipal utilities, and keeps members informed so they can speak with one unified voice.

Mutual Aid &

Emergency Assistance

Member utilities support one another during storms and outages through a coordinated mutual aid network, helping restore power faster when member communities need it most.

 

We support emergency preparedness through coordinated response efforts and a mutual aid network connecting member utilities.

Education &

Training

SDMEA hosts events throughout the year to keep member utility staff current on safety, technology, and industry best practices.

 

Through the SDMEA Conference & Technology Expo and a range of safety training resources, we support ongoing member education

Workforce Development & Scholarships

SDMEA invests in the next generation of the industry by supporting students pursuing power-related careers.

 

SDMEA supports a scholarship for students at Mitchell Technical College, funded in part through annual fundraising events such as the Sporting Clays Event.
