About SDMEA

The South Dakota Municipal Electric Association (SDMEA) is an affiliate of the South Dakota Municipal League. We represent 35 community-owned electric utilities across the state and are governed by an elected five-member board serving three-year terms.

South Dakota has a long tradition of public power, dating back to 1899 when Brookings first electrified its streetlights. Today, SDMEA continues that legacy by helping cities provide reliable, local utility services to their residents through legislative advocacy, mutual aid, and professional development.

Community Owned.

Revenue is invested back into the the community and decisions are made at the local level.

Our Partners.

Missouri River Energy Services and Heartland Energy support SDMEA through program funding and by serving on committees, helping strengthen public power across  member communities.
